What is IEC?
International Experience Canada (IEC) is a government work permit designed for youth aged 18-35 to explore Canada while gaining valuable experience working and residing in the country. IEC also works similarly to Express Entry. Potential candidates who meet the essential eligibility criteria must apply to the IEC pool to be considered. From there, IRCC selects an application profile pool to apply for a work permit.
Some countries, depending on their citizenship, allow applicants to apply for the program more than once in different categories. However, these vary by candidate, and they are not allowed to participate for more time than their country allows.

IEC streams
There are three stream candidates that a candidate can apply for:
- International Co-Op (Internship)
- Young Professional
- Working Holiday
International Co-Op (Internship): This stream allows citizens of eligible countries to arrive in Canada and work as interns for a Canadian company. IRCC notes that applicants must arrange their co-op placement before they apply for IEC.
Young Professional Stream: In this stream candidates are issued an employer-specific LMIA-based work permit if they have a job offer lined up and willing to work for a single employer while they are in Canada.
Open Work Permit: This stream allows candidates to get a work permit under the Working Holiday Stream. These are Open Work permits, which allow the candidate to work for more employers in Canada for up to two years and allow more flexibility in terms of location.
Candidates have 20 days to submit their work permit application, after receiving and accepting an ITA. The confirmed deadline will be available in candidate's online account.
Additional Requirements for IEC Canada
In addition to passport and port of entry letter, IEC will ask for additional requirements to apply such as:
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Health insurance
- Ticket of Departure from Canada
- Bank statement of no more than one week
- Funds equivalent to $2,500
