Immigration & Jobs Scams

Immigration and job scams are some of the most common malpractices that still exist. With dreams of starting a career abroad, most job seekers often fall prey to unsolicited sources offering fake promises and commitments. The scammers exploit candidates in multiple fraudulent ways, pushing us to emphasize the importance of being more aware and mindful of such practices.

The Most Common Types of Job Scams & Frauds

Job scams can be pulled through using various techniques and approaches. Some of the most frequent job and immigration frauds that you need to be aware of are as follows:

Uninvited Job Offers:

Be attentive if you receive an overseas job offer you haven’t applied for. Scammers prey on despairing individuals with too-good-to-deny employment opportunities.

Note: Refrain from believing in opportunities that seem too far-fetched or unrealistic.

Requesting personal/financial information:

This is one of the regular methods of scamming wherein fraudsters demand personal information or bank account details in the pretext of transferring money or validating your financial accounts. Some companies persuade you to reveal your SIN number (Social Security number) or give you a false number.

Note: No legitimate company asks you for personal financial information.

Lacking legitimacy:

Some companies offer to pay you your dream salary or a position you have been waiting for but have no information online or lack any online presence. Any company that does not have a verifiable contact number, website, or web address is most likely a scam.

Note: Authorized companies will always have an online and social media presence.

Phishing:

A phishing scam can be anything from an immigration-related ad, instant messages, calls, text messages, or emails from immigration consultancies. Clicking on the link provided can lead the scammer into acquiring your personal information that can be used for malicious purposes.

Note: Remember, you are only one click away from online deceit.

Online meet invitations via Google Docs:

Some false immigration companies send in Google docs, asking you to fill in your details or a resume. Always pay attention to the email sender and the legality of such documents.

Note: Avoid opening unverifiable documents from unverified sources.
