International Grads out-earn their Canadian Counterparts at Waterloo University

According to a recent survey, international graduates earn more on average than their Canadian counterparts. International student graduates from the University of Waterloo reportedly get higher salaries than Canadian-born graduates and Canadian-born university grads nationwide. The University of Waterloo is one of Canada’s top universities, with the 115th position on the QS World Rankings 2025.  The university’s Technology and Engineering-based study courses and co-op program attract students worldwide.

The economists at the University of Waterloo conducted a thorough survey to conclude the findings in the latest report.

The factors that were considered for the study are as follows:

  • T1 income tax returns
  • IRCC’s Immigration data
  • Study records at the University of Waterloo

International students who graduated between the years 2017 and 2019 earned an average of 37% more than their Canadian counterparts. After 12 months of graduating, international students earned around $57,500, while Canadians could only make $42,000 per year.

StatCan reveals that Immigrants in Canada have better education and economic outcomes

A recent report by StatCan revealed that immigrants have better education and economic prospects. Newcomers settling in Canada as children are likely to pursue higher education in the country. Immigrants after 25 years of age are said to surpass the average median salaries of Canadians. The salaries of international graduates in the first 13 years of their careers are reported to be more than those of an average Canadian graduate. Foreign-born Canada PR graduates are said to be earning $120,000, while international students are making $100,000-120,000 per year.
