Curricular Practical Training (CPT) lets F-1 students gain work experience off campus through jobs or internships that directly relate to their studies. To be eligible, the academic program must require practical experience for credit. Students usually need to finish at least one academic year at a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved school. University approval from a Designated School Official (DSO) is needed before starting CPT. The work must be directly related to the student's major. CPT can be either full-time or part-time, and compensation varies.
