Dual German Citizenship Policy
The German Bundesrat officially approved a streamlined processing of the German Citizenship Law on February 2, 2024. The revised Citizenship law will allow foreigners to acquire German Citizenship while maintaining their original passport.
The new law was introduced to help foreigners in Germany maintain their original identity and still be able to naturalise. The changes in the law are set to come into effect in May 2024 and will allow eligible individuals to have Dual Citizenship.

Major changes in the German Citizenship laws
The new law will facilitate citizenship applicants with simplified rules.
Some of the major changes in the laws are as follows:
- Applicants would now be eligible to apply for German Citizenship after legally residing in Germany for five years rather than eight.
- The waiting time for citizenship applicants with a German spouse will be reduced to four years.
- The rules will also apply to the guest workers who have been arriving in Germany since the 1950s, provided they are proficient in German.
