Highlights: U.S to grant citizenship to 500,000 immigrants!
- U.S. President Joe Biden announced a new citizenship plan that will give citizenship to 500,000 immigrants.

New U.S. Citizenship Plan
Joe Biden announced a new plan that grants citizenship to around half a million immigrants in the country. The new program aims to offer work permits, protection from deportation and a pathway to permanent residency to nearly 500,000 immigrants. As per the new program, spouses of U.S. citizens who have been living in the country without a legal status can now apply for permanent residency and U.S. citizenship.
Who is eligible for the New Citizenship Plan?
Immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens and have resided in the country for ten years can qualify under the new citizenship plan. Around 50,000 children who are non-citizens with a parent who is married to a U.S. citizen are eligible the program.
Note: Immigrants who hit the 10-year mark after June 17, 2024, will not qualify for the new citizenship plan.
What are the benefits of the New U.S. Citizenship Plan?
The new program focuses on helping around 500,000 immigrants who have been residing in the country with no legal status.
Some of the major benefits that immigrants can avail of under the new citizenship program are as follows:
- Immigrants with an approved application can apply for a Green card within a 3-year time frame.
 - Immigrants receive protection and security from deportation.
 - Qualifying immigrants are also granted work permits upon eligibility.
 - Spouses of U.S. citizens have no restrictions on the duration of the marriage, with a basic requirement of completing a 10-year residency mark.
 
Note: The process is expected to open by the end of summer, and the application fee has yet to be decided.
