LIVE, STUDY, AND WORK IN AUSTRALIA WITH A TEMPORARY GRADUATE VISA
International students can live, study, and work once they have finished their studies using a Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) Visa.
Eligibility for Temporary Graduate Visa
To be eligible for the Subclass 485 visa, you must:
- Be below 50 years of age
- Hold a visa deemed eligible
- Have, in the past 6 months, held a student visa
- Have qualified recently in a course registered by CRICOS
- Be nominated in not more than one stream (you can’t change visa streams once you submit)
- attach specified evidence at the time of filing the form
There are 3 types of Temporary Graduate Visa.
GRADUATE WORK STREAM
This visa is meant for international students who have graduated recently possessing qualifications and that has relevance to specific jobs in demand in Australia. It allows you to study, live, and work in Australia on a temporary basis.
Here are some noteworthy details about the stream.
- Graduates who have felt the impact of travel restrictions due to COVID-19 can now submit for and be granted a Subclass 485 visa outside Australia. For this, they must have held or must be holding a Study Permit in the past 12 months to file a form.
- You are allowed to work in Australia
- You must have a qualification that’s relevant to a job on the skilled occupation list
- You are allowed to bring your family along
With this permit, you can stay in Australia for up to 18 months. Hong Kong nationals may stay in Australia for 5 years.
The cost of getting this permit is AUD1,650. The processing time is from 9 to 13 months.
POST-STUDY WORK STREAM
Under this stream, the Subclass 485 visa aims at international students who have graduated recently from an Australian institution. With the visa, you can live, study, and work in Australia on a temporary basis.
- Graduates who have felt the impact of travel restrictions due to COVID-19 can now submit for and be granted a Subclass 485 visa outside Australia. For this, they must have held or must be holding an Australia Student Permit in the past 12 months to file a form.
- You are allowed to work in Australia
- You are allowed to bring your family along
- You must have earned a degree recently doing a course registered by CRICOS
With this visa, you can stay in Australia for 2 to 4 years. This depends on the qualification you hold. Hong Kong nationals may stay in Australia for 5 years.
The cost of getting this visa is AUD1,650. The processing time is from 8 to 9 months.

SECOND POST-STUDY WORK STREAM
This visa is meant for those who have held a Temporary Graduate Visa under the post-study work stream. These individuals will have graduated from an Australian institution situated in a regional location. With the visa, you can live, study, and work in Australia on a temporary basis.
Holders of Temporary Graduate visa under this stream can bring their family along to Australia.
With this visa, you can stay in Australia for 1 to 2 years. This depends on:
- the regional location of the institution where you graduated from, leading to the granting of your first Temporary Graduate visa under this stream
- the regional area where you have been a resident holding your first Temporary Graduate visa under this stream
Hong Kong nationals may stay in Australia for 5 years.
